Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born in 1805 at Kainakary, Kerala. After his early schooling and priestly studies, he was ordained priest in 1829. Father Kuriakose along with Fathers Thomas Palackal and Thomas Porukara founded the Indigenous Religious Congregation - Carmelites Mary Immaculate (CMI) on May 11, 1831. Brother Jacob Kanianthara, who in 1865 became the first professed brother co-operator in the congregation also co-operated with those three founding fathers from the beginning. Father Kuriakose was a pioneer in education and social work in the country. He was an illustrious scholar, educationist, prophetic writer, poet, multilinguist, social reformer and an organizer.

Father Kuriakose was a man of deep prayer and he stayed in close communion with the Lord amidst his religious and social activities, he was accepted as a man of God.

Father Kuriakose took a keen interest in starting educational Institutions attached to the Monasteries and churches. The idea paved the way for progressive change in the field of education in India. Education is one of the Charisms of the CMI Congregation. He died on 3 January 1871 and his mortal remains are kept in St. Joseph’s Monastery, Mannanam, Kerala. He was canonized on 23 November 2014 in Rome by Pope Francis. The CMI congregation inspired by the vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara renders its service in educational, social, health care and other sectors aiming at the integral development of the society.

History​

Bharath Matha Degree College was established by CMI (Carmelites of Mary Immaculate) priests of Mysuru Province. CMI Congregation is an indigenous Catholic religious congregation established by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. CMI Congregation is the fulfillment of dreams and visions of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Today CMI religious congregation runs more than 400 Schools and 35 Colleges and 1 University all over India.

Bharath Matha Degree College is owned and managed by St. Thomas Education Society Mysuru. St. Thomas Education Society is an incarnation of educational dreams of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805 – 1871), the founder of  the religious congregation CMI. He envisioned the sunrise of a renewed humanity through integral development of body, mind and Spirit.

St. Thomas Education Society Mysuru established in 2003 with registration number 146/2003-04, is a registered society under Karnataka societies Registration Act 1960. This Society is constituted for the Administration, Management, Co-Ordination effective and efficient development and  smooth functioning of Educational Institutions under the St. Paul’s Province Mysuru.

Bharath Matha Degree College is located at Koppa, Mysuru District of Karnataka. It was established in 2011. The College is built in a campus surrounding lush green atmosphere, scenic beauty, aesthetic structure and serene setting. The academic year 2010 -11 was a milestone in the history of St. Thomas Education Society. While St. Thomas educational society  was focusing on Schools and PU Colleges Fr. Augustine thought differently and came up with this revolutionary idea of starting a Degree College which certainly was a paradigm shift in thinking. It was the dogged persistence of Fr. Augustine that helped the College to get the required permissions from the University of Mysore syndicate.

After the initial struggles and toils, the College commenced from the academic year      2011 – 12. In spite of all odds, the college managed to get 20 students for the first batch. The good word of mouth had its impact on the admission next year. There was threefold increase in admissions.

                 

Fr. Jomon Joseph was the very first Principal of this College and in 2013 -14 the College launched the BBM Course. The very first batch of BBM had 20 Students. In the meantime, the number of intakes for Commerce increased making the total of 159 students.

As of now the college is catering the needs of 180 students’ educational needs.
